Apple’s App Store and Google Play Users Spent over $83 Billion on Mobile Apps in the Last 12 Months, Globally

The year 2019 bought approximately $83.5 billion from worldwide users of Apple’s App Store and Google Play. Sensor Tower Store Intelligence data claims that the number is 17% greater than the $71.3 billion revenue generated during 2018.

According to the report by Sensor Tower, Apple’s App Store saw revenue of $54.2 billion for the year 2019. This was 16.3% year-over-year growth from the $46.6 billion recorded in the previous year. In comparison, Google Play users spent around $29.3 billion during the same years – which signifies the spending habits of the users on both platforms.

Entertainment apps generated a major chunk of revenue for App Store with spending of almost $3.9 billion on Games while spending on Social apps were the highest in Google Play with around $686 million.

The year 2019 also saw a significant rise in first-time app installs. Both the platforms reached a combined total of 114.9 billion – a year-over-year increase of 9.1% from the recorded 105.3 billion in 2018.

When it comes to non-game app category, Photo & Video apps were the clear winner on iOS while the Tools category topped the Google Play downloads with 5.7 billion – an increase of about 6% from the 5.4 billion in 2018.

Google Play surpassed the App Store in new app installs with 84.3 billion downloads. The later totaled 30.6 billion downloads for the same.

Sensor Tower recorded approximately $61.7 billion spending in mobile games across both the platforms in 2019 – 12.8% from the $54.7 billion quote of 2018. Spending on Games in the App Store tallied at $37 billion in 2019, an increase of around 11.4% from the $33.2 billion in 2018. The game, Honor of Kings by Tencent was ranked as the top-grossing title on iOS with revenue of $1.43 billion worldwide.

Game spending on Google Play Store was recorded at $24.7 billion – a 15% increase from the $21.5 billion in 2018. The top-grossing title of Google Play was Lineage M by NCSOFT that managed to garner around $691 million globally.

First-time mobile game installs were recorded at 42.1 billion worldwide in 2019. The figure increased by 9.9% year-over-year by 6.4% recorded in 2018. Google Play accounted for 78% of all game downloads at 32.9 billion while the App Store managed with 9.2 billion downloads. The top game on Google was the Garena Free Fire while Call of Duty: Mobile was the winner on App Store.

The recorded revenues of both – the App Store and the Play Store shows healthy growth in the overall market. And seems like it will continue to be strong – thanks to the innovation of developers.
